The plot follows a war veteran who attempts to save young girls from sex traffickers. At 83 minutes long, Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here is a no-nonsense psychological thriller/action film that exemplifies both director Ramsay and star Joaquin Phoenix’s reputation for consistently producing thought-provoking art. The film premiered at Cannes Film Festival 2017 where it received critical acclaim. Plot

Joaquin Phoenix played Joe, a former veteran and a mercenary, is contacted to rescue an 11-year-old girl who has been abducted and forced into prostitution, Joe sets out to track down her captors. The plot was difficult to follow at times because there were many flashbacks between scenes which made it difficult to determine when things were happening chronologically. The plot also became predictable because you could guess what would happen next based on how previous scenes ended. However, I found that I didn’t care about these issues because Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was so compelling and mesmerizing. He played an extremely disturbed man who can’t seem to find peace even though he has suffered greatly throughout his life.

Why You Should Watch IT ?

The simplest answer is “Joaquin Phoenix”. The movie lacked an intense plot or action-packed scenes as expected from a movie involving a ” hitman”, “abducted girl” and “bad guys” but the solid performance by the OSCAR winner actor compensated those expectations. So, if you are a fan of fine acting and neo-noir psychological thrillers then this is for you.
