To adventure film viewers who are unfamiliar with the PlayStation video game series Uncharted, the film looks like just another treasure hunt movie, but it’s so much more. Backed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, the action-adventure film takes viewers on a journey similar to a modern-day Indiana Jones.

Based on the PlayStation game series of the same name, the film focuses on the adventures of Nathan Drake and his origins as he became the treasure hunter that the game’s fans have come to love and adore. The feature film offers an origin story of Nathan Drake(Tom Holland), a history buff, and Victor “Sully” Sullivan(Mark Wahlberg), Nathan’s shadowy mentor, traveler, and treasure hunter, bringing together the various threads of Nathan’s past previously unexplored in the four PlayStation games into a coherent whole.

Tom Holland’s live-action Sony Uncharted Nathan Drake has long been surrounded by skepticism over the decision not to adopt one of the famous Naughty Dogs games and instead tell the original prequel story of the acclaimed game. The film version of Uncharted is a small start to a possible Sony film franchise.

The Uncharted movie was finally released in 2020, after a long wait. Ruben Fleischer (Venom) was brought in to replace Knight, and he continued on the project until it was finished. Sony has set a new release date of March 5, 2021. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was acknowledged to be a source of influence for the tale. Antonio Banderas played the villain Santiago Moncada, Tati Gabrielle as his mercenary henchwoman, and Sophia Ali as Drake’s love interest and fellow treasure seeker Chloe Frazer rounded out the cast. The script was reworked by writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. As composer, Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones) has been hired.

While the first-ever Uncharted movie is reminiscent of the Indiana Jones movies that inspired video games, it doesn’t have the light-hearted, comedic, and action-packed magic of the franchise or the original. Uncharted is absurd but funny and compelling but still fell short of the Indiana Jones. The visual effects felt completely CGI which is a big disappointment though the production company dedicated a huge part of the budget to special effects. The action sequences are mediocre but Tom Holland’s performance is worth praising.
